Most British passengers flying to Turkish North Cyprus, whether for holidays or property visits, currently choose to fly via Larnaca in the Greek south of the island, to avoid having to change planes in Turkiye. This was due to the disembarkation policy introduced by the British government in 2017 for all airlines flying from the UK to Ercan (ECN) North Cyprus Airport.
But today sees great news for travellers from London to North Cyprus – starting on 31st October, a popular budget airline Anadolu Jet, will operate direct night flights to North Cyprus Ercan from Stansted.
“Faster and Easier Journeys for passengers” from London to North Cyprus.
Although these flights will still have to “touch down” for 30 minutes in Sabiha Gökçen Airport in Istanbul, there will be no need to disembark. Passengers will remain on the aircraft – a great boon for those who are disabled or travelling with children. It will also hugely reduce the travel time overall.
This change has come about as a result of the campaign by British Turkish Cypriot activists who contacted 100s of UK MPs including including Chingford and Woodford Green MP Sir Iain Duncan, Edmonton MP Kate Osamor, and Enfield North MP Feryal Clark.
North Cyprus International advises all of its visitors to Cyprus, whether travelling via the south or north of the island to currently book flights well in advance. The reason is that there is currently a property boom for North Cyprus property and flight prices are currently far higher than normal. Whilst initially there will only be one flight per day operating the “touch down” service, NCI hopes that this will pave the way for far more direct flights in the near future.
