The much anticipated North Cyprus Water Project, undersea freshwater pipeline ( North Cyprus Water Project ) between Turkey and North Cyprus is due to be switched on today – August 7th 2015 – by Turkish Minister Mr. Veysel Eroglu. This water project is the only one of its kind in the world.
This is fabulous news for all prospective North Cyprus property seekers and those relocating to North Cyprus or hoping to set up new businesses. Turkish Cypriot officials say the undersea pipeline project will be able to provide enough fresh, pure drinking water for Northern Cyprus for the next 50 years. It is also fabulous news for North Cyprus farmers needing water for irrigation and will hugely benefit the economy in general.
In the past, there have occasionally been water cuts and rationing in the south of Cyprus which is more densely populated than the north. This means now that the North Cyprus economy, in general, can develop securely knowing that the water supply to North Cyprus is assured for homes, farming and businesses.
Golfers will also be delighted as it means that the luxury 18 hole Korineum Golf Course east of Kyrenia, which rivals Aphrodite Hills in south Cyprus, will always have a guaranteed water supply to keep the greens top notch!
This new undersea water project network will pump 75 million cubic meters of water each year from the Alaköprü Dam in Anamur, Mersin in Turkey to North Cyprus with suspended pipelines 250m deep under the sea. It will be stored in a new, especially expanded reservoir in Gecitkoy in the western side of North Cyprus. This development means that the Turkish side of Cyprus will now control the major part of the supply of fresh water to the whole island of Cyprus – which usually has water only from the winter rains in reservoirs. The Turkish Cypriot government is keen to share this water with the whole island of Cyprus in any future agreed settlement for a future United Cyprus Federation. For this reason, some are calling it the “Water of Peace”.
The next step will be to complete the transmission of the fresh water from the new pipeline and North Cyprus reservoir to residents and properties in Kyrenia, Famagusta homes and Dipkarpaz.
